May 07, 2026 – Bahraini authorities have issued a stark warning regarding dangerous synthetic substances being marketed to young people under the deceptive guise of "CBD." This critical alert emphasizes that the misleading use of the term “CBD” is actively disguising dangerous synthetic substances circulating among young people, posing significant health risks. The Ministry of Interior's Al Aman Program delivered the warning, noting that this misleading terminology is intentionally used to obscure the true nature of these harmful compounds. This caution comes as part of broader efforts by the authorities to inform the public about emerging drug threats and protect vulnerable populations. The authorities continue to monitor the circulation of these substances vigilantly, which pose significant health risks to consumers due to their unregulated nature and unknown composition. The warning shows the critical importance of public awareness concerning illicit drug trends and the tactics employed by those who distribute them.

The Deceptive Marketing Tactic

The substances circulated illegally under similar names are entirely different in composition, origin, and risk compared to legitimate products. Illegal manufacturers are producing synthetic cannabinoids in clandestine laboratories, subsequently distributing these compounds under misleading labels. These labels often prominently include "CBD," intentionally blurring the distinction between regulated, often beneficial, products and dangerous synthetics. The deceptive marketing tactic aims to exploit public familiarity with legitimate CBD for illicit sales, capitalizing on a perceived sense of safety or therapeutic benefit. This misrepresentation poses significant health risks to consumers who may unknowingly ingest harmful and unpredictable chemicals, believing them to be harmless or even beneficial. The goal of these distributors is to bypass scrutiny and attract unsuspecting buyers, particularly among younger demographics.

Understanding Real CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound derived from the cannabis plant. It is fundamentally distinct from Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis responsible for the "high" associated with marijuana use. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce intoxicating effects, making it an appealing compound for various applications without altering a user's mental state. In many jurisdictions, the legality of CBD products often depends on their THC content, with strict limits in place to ensure they are non-psychoactive and do not fall under controlled substance regulations.

In some countries, CBD is utilized under stringent medical and pharmaceutical supervision for specific conditions, reflecting its potential therapeutic value when properly regulated. These applications typically involve carefully regulated products prescribed or recommended by healthcare professionals, ensuring appropriate dosage and purity. Conditions for which CBD may be used include certain forms of epilepsy and chronic pain, where its therapeutic properties are being explored or have been established under controlled environments and rigorous scientific study. This contrasts sharply with the unregulated synthetic substances falsely labeled as CBD, which lack any such medical oversight or proven efficacy.

Dangers of Synthetic Substitutes

These synthetic substances remain entirely unregulated, and their exact chemical composition is frequently unknown, contributing to unpredictable and potentially harmful effects, authorities reported. Such products do not contain verified therapeutic benefits and instead carry the risk of severe physical and psychological consequences for users, often far exceeding the dangers of legitimate, regulated substances. Without regulatory oversight, there is no guarantee of purity, dosage, or even the basic identity of the compounds being consumed, making each use a hazardous gamble. Concerns have also been raised regarding significant behavioral changes observed in individuals linked to the misuse of these substances, including aggression, paranoia, and other psychiatric symptoms. The unpredictable nature of their components means that consumers face unknown health risks with each use, ranging from acute intoxication and organ damage to long-term neurological and psychological issues. This situation puts users at significant risk of adverse reactions, which can range from acute intoxication to long-term health complications, noting the critical need for public vigilance.

Official Warning and Concerns

Colonel Dr. Osama Bahar, a key figure in the Ministry of Interior’s Al Aman Program, issued the warning, noting that drug dealers are deliberately exploiting the name CBD to peddle dangerous compounds. Colonel Dr. Bahar stated, "drug dealers used the name CBD manufactured as synthetic hash, a dangerous substance and gave it that name so if a teenager gets caught he can tell his mother it’s a beneficial therapeutic substance." This deceptive tactic is designed to create a false sense of security and legitimacy around highly dangerous drugs. Authorities stressed that this practice misleads young people and their families by creating a false sense of safety, making it difficult for parents to discern the true nature of the substances their children might be exposed to. These behaviors, including changes in personality and conduct, may result from the influence of dangerous synthetic substances that can profoundly affect mood, judgment, and self-control, according to officials. The authorities continue to urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and educate themselves and their children about these emerging threats.
