Bahraini authorities have arrested 41 individuals allegedly linked to a group associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the ideology of Velayat-e Faqih, or “Guardianship of the Jurist,” Bahrain's Interior Ministry reported. The ministry stated that its security agencies uncovered the group’s "main organization" following intelligence operations and investigations into earlier cases involving alleged espionage for foreign actors. The ministry accused members of the group of expressing sympathy with "the blatant Iranian aggression," amid heightened regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Tehran. Legal measures against those detained are underway, and investigations continue to identify additional individuals allegedly connected to the network. Bahrain has previously accused Iran-backed groups of destabilizing activities within the kingdom, allegations Tehran has repeatedly denied.

Broader Regional Instability

Regional tensions have escalated, with a U.S. Strike in the Strait of Hormuz reportedly leaving six people missing and several others wounded on Iranian vessels, according to CNN citing Iranian authorities. Concurrently, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) struck over 85 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon within the past day and issued evacuation warnings for nine communities in southern Lebanon. The IDF also reported locating an explosive drone launched by Hezbollah in northern Israel, though no injuries were reported.

In response to ongoing concerns, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and companies accused of assisting Iran's weapons program. U.S. Intelligence estimates indicate that Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is playing a central role in shaping the country's war and negotiations strategy. German politician Friedrich Merz stated that European countries and the U.S. Share the goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, despite divisions over the U.S.- and Israeli-led conflict against Iran that began in late February. Separately, protesters in northern Israel blocked a highway to demonstrate against perceived state neglect in addressing crime within Arab communities.

International Diplomatic Maneuvers

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Saturday, May 9, 2026, that Europe remained committed to preserving NATO despite tensions with the United States. Merz affirmed, "We are really willing to keep this alliance alive for the future," emphasizing a "unity of purpose" within the alliance. President Donald Trump, however, ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. Troops from Germany and canceled a planned deployment of Tomahawk missiles following Merz's earlier comments regarding Iran, which Trump reportedly viewed as 'humiliating' to the U.S.

Separately, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met to discuss developments in the Middle East and efforts toward de-escalation in Iran. Meanwhile, an Iranian official detailed injuries sustained by Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, in the strike that killed his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Mojtaba Khamenei suffered injuries to his kneecap and back, and his wife was killed in the attack. In other regional developments, Israel approved the resettlement of Sa-Nur in the West Bank, which includes plans for the construction of 126 permanent homes.

Related Incidents and Protests

Two Gaza aid flotilla activists, Thiago Ávila and Saif Abu Keshek, are scheduled for release from Israeli detention on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and will be transferred to immigration authorities for deportation. The Shin Bet security service notified Adalah's legal team of this decision earlier in the day. The activists, held for over a week since their detention by the Israeli navy on April 30, 2026, were aboard a vessel carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. Adalah stated the activists were subjected to solitary confinement and harsh conditions, and both have been on hunger strike since their detention, with Saif Abu Keshek ceasing water intake on May 5, 2026. Attorney Hadeel Abu Saleh argued their detention on a ship flying the Italian flag violated international law, prompting Italy to condemn their arrest.

Meanwhile, Israeli settlers on Friday, May 8, 2026, compelled Palestinians to exhume a body buried near the West Bank settlement of Sa-Nur. Separately, a Palestinian father and son were reportedly injured in an Israeli settler attack near Ad-Dhahiriya, south of Hebron. Concurrently, approximately 2,000 individuals protested against Israel's participation in the Venice Biennale ahead of the art festival's opening.
