The Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) hosted its 24th Annual Shari’ah Boards Conference on 11 and 12 October 2026 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bahrain. This two-day event served as a central gathering point for the international Islamic finance community. Attendance included approximately 1,000 Shari’ah scholars, regulators, and experts present in person, while more than 4,000 participants followed the proceedings online. The high level of engagement from both physical and virtual attendees notes the ongoing global interest in the standardization of Islamic financial practices.
H.E. Shaikh Ebrahim bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the AAOIFI Board of Trustees, noted the significant role the conference has played in guiding the Islamic finance industry worldwide over the past 23 years. He added that this year’s conference coincides with the 35th anniversary of AAOIFI’s founding, reflecting a journey marked by excellence and growth in shaping the future of Islamic finance around the globe. The conference provided a platform for these leaders to discuss the evolution of the industry and the necessity for continued harmonization of practices across international borders.
Global Reach of Standards
AAOIFI standards currently maintain adoption or recognition by approximately 50 regulatory and supervisory authorities across more than 40 countries. This institutional reach establishes a framework for the implementation of Islamic financial practices within diverse international jurisdictions. By providing a unified set of guidelines, the organization supports the stability and transparency of financial institutions that operate according to Shari’ah principles. The widespread recognition of these standards demonstrates the organization's influence in creating a cohesive regulatory environment that transcends national boundaries, ensuring that institutions can operate with a clear understanding of compliance requirements regardless of their geographical location.
Formalizing further cooperation, the organization entered into memoranda of understanding with four entities during the conference proceedings. These agreements include the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, the Union of Arab Securities Authorities, the Chamber of Auditors of Uzbekistan, and IDENFO. These partnerships aim to facilitate the application and oversight of AAOIFI standards within the respective operational scopes of these organizations. By aligning with these specific bodies, AAOIFI intends to strengthen the integration of its standards into local reporting and regulatory frameworks. The inclusion of these four diverse entities shows the organization's commitment to expanding its reach into emerging markets and strengthening existing relationships within the global financial sector. The signing of these documents marks a strategic step forward in the organization's mission to promote the adoption of its standards, providing a foundation for future collaboration and technical exchange among the signatory parties and the broader AAOIFI network. This collaborative approach is designed to enhance the quality of financial reporting and audit practices globally, ensuring that the standards remain relevant and effective for regulators and practitioners alike.
