Wajba Marks World Food Day with Food Waste Initiative

Wajba, the first surplus-food marketplace app in Bahrain, launched a specific initiative to coincide with World Food Day on 16 October. This international day is observed annually on October 16 to address global hunger and sustainability issues. Nasser Kanoo, Wajba chief operating officer, noted the significance of the timing for the platform’s operations. "World Food Day reminds us that innovation does not always need to be complicated," Nasser Kanoo stated. The app connects consumers with excess food from local businesses to reduce waste. By facilitating these transactions, the service aims to manage food resources more effectively across the country. As Bahrain's first surplus-food marketplace app, Wajba serves as a digital bridge between food providers and the local community.

App Impact and Reach

Wajba has prevented more than 15,000 meals from going to waste since the platform began its operations. These figures represent the accumulated impact of the marketplace in connecting local businesses with consumers seeking surplus food. Nasser Kanoo, Wajba chief operating officer, commented on the practical nature of these outcomes. "It can begin with a simple decision to make better use of food that has already been prepared and remains suitable for consumption," he said. The platform maintains a consistent focus on these metrics to measure its ongoing contribution to the reduction of food waste within the local market.

Operations currently extend across Bahrain, where the platform works with 65 vendor partners. Wajba works with 65 vendor partners across Bahrain to ensure a consistent supply of surplus items for users. This network allows the application to facilitate exchanges between diverse food providers and the public. Nasser Kanoo described the dual benefits of this model for the local economy. "For businesses, reducing waste can help recover value from products that might otherwise remain unsold, while consumers can access quality food at lower prices," he stated. "When businesses and consumers both participate, small everyday decisions can contribute to a more responsible and sustainable food system in Bahrain."

Participation in World Food Day aligns with the global recognition of sustainability challenges. The theme for World Food Day 2024 is 'Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow'. By centering its current initiative on this messaging, Wajba aims to integrate its waste-reduction services into the broader conversation surrounding food security and resource management. The platform continues to monitor its metrics as it seeks to expand the number of meals saved and the count of participating vendors within the country. Through these efforts, the organization seeks to maintain the momentum established by its initial operational goals and expand the reach of its sustainability mission across the Kingdom.
