Bahraini MPs will debate and vote on a proposal to implement an artificial intelligence-driven system for matching citizens with employment opportunities on Tuesday. MP Dr Munir Suroor introduced the measure to address current imbalances in the national workforce. "Many jobs are held by non-Bahrainis in sectors where Bahrainis could do the work well," Dr Munir Suroor said. The proposed technology aims to provide a centralized platform for monitoring employment trends and labor requirements across the kingdom. Explaining the necessity of the initiative, Dr Munir Suroor stated, "Without a central system to study the job market and forecast future needs, it becomes harder to match workers with available jobs." Parliament will evaluate the potential integration of this AI tool to streamline local recruitment processes. The upcoming session on Tuesday will see the proposal debated and voted on by MPs, marking a significant step in the legislative process for the artificial intelligence initiative.

Legislative Committee Backs Proposal

The Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee, led by MP Mahmood Fardan, unanimously recommended that members of parliament approve the proposal. This endorsement follows a committee review of the technical and legal requirements for integrating artificial intelligence into national recruitment processes. The committee, headed by MP Mahmood Fardan, conducted an extensive review of the legal framework surrounding the implementation of such technology. After evaluating the proposal, the committee reached a consensus and unanimously recommended that MPs approve the proposal, signaling strong support for the measure within the legislative body.

The Labour Ministry challenged the necessity of the new system, stating that existing mechanisms already perform much of the work proposed. Officials from the ministry noted that the National Employment Platform currently provides functions similar to those described in the motion, including the tracking of job market vacancies and candidate profiles. According to the Labour Ministry, the National Employment Platform already performs much of the work proposed by the new AI-driven initiative. This existing system manages data related to job market vacancies and candidate profiles, which the ministry argues serves as a functional foundation for current labor market needs.

Tamkeen launched the Employability Skills Portal in December 2024 to support the local workforce. This portal allows students, workers, and employers to identify in-demand skills within the kingdom. The platform serves as a resource for professional development and helps align individual qualifications with the requirements of the labor market. By providing a digital space for students, workers, and employers to interact, the portal aims to bridge the gap between current skill sets and the evolving demands of the Bahraini economy. The launch of Tamkeen's Employability Skills Portal in December 2024 represents a dedicated effort to ensure that the national workforce remains competitive by identifying and promoting in-demand skills across various sectors. This resource remains active as a tool for professional growth, allowing users to better understand the specific qualifications required by employers throughout the kingdom.
