Scattered rainfall and hail affected several parts of Bahrain on the morning of 20 October 2026. The Meteorological Directorate of the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry stated that the weather event was unexpected because forecasts had indicated dry conditions.

According to the Meteorological Directorate, "some areas of Bahrain witnessed the formation of local cumulus clouds that led to thundery rain." Officials explained that "this was despite there being no indication of chances of rain within the weather forecasts. This may be attributed to the development of local factors that contributed to atmospheric instability, coinciding with the availability of moisture and resulting in the growth of limited-scope thunderclouds." The Meteorological Directorate further noted, "rainfall was thus observed in several parts of the kingdom due to a thunderstorm cell that formed rapidly."

Atmospheric Conditions and Causes

The Meteorological Directorate of the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry attributed the rainfall event to the formation of local cumulus clouds and atmospheric instability. Officials stated that these conditions occurred unexpectedly despite initial weather projections for 20 October 2026. Those original forecasts had predicted temperatures ranging between 24C and 37C with no rain expected across the kingdom.

Updated forecasts for 20 October 2026 subsequently indicated a shift in environmental conditions. These revised reports registered temperatures between 25C and 38C. Additionally, the updated data showed humidity levels reaching 80 percent, which contributed to the development of the thunderstorm cell. The Meteorological Directorate relied on these updated metrics to monitor the rapid growth of the clouds that ultimately impacted several parts of Bahrain.

Meteorological Analysis of Event

Bahrain typically receives less than 100mm of rainfall annually on average, marking the recent precipitation as a notable deviation from the kingdom’s arid climate patterns. The Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry’s Meteorological Directorate maintains these long-term climate records to monitor shifts in local weather behavior.

The Meteorological Directorate forecast no rain for the remainder of the week following 20 October 2026. Official projections indicate that stable conditions are expected to return across the country, with no further thunderstorm cells identified in the current atmospheric models. Residents in areas such as Hamad Town should expect dry weather to persist as the kingdom transitions back to its standard environmental state. Nader Adnan and other officials continue to track data to ensure accuracy in these updated projections for the coming days.
