Priya Blue Group, a prominent green ship recycler from South Asia, has partnered with Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) to establish the Middle East's largest ship recycling facility in Bahrain. The joint venture, which was launched this week, aims to significantly expand sustainable ship decommissioning capabilities in the region. This collaboration brings together Priya Blue Group, recognized as one of South Asia’s largest green ship recyclers, with ASRY, a leading maritime industrial facility in the Middle East. The strategic alliance is set to create the Middle East’s biggest ship recycling yard, marking a key development for environmentally responsible vessel dismantling in the area.

Facility Capabilities and Operations

The new facility will integrate ASRY's existing shipyard capabilities, employing dry dock, slipway, and alongside methods for vessel dismantling. These diverse methods ensure flexibility and efficiency in handling a wide range of vessel types and sizes. It possesses the capacity to process vessels up to Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) size, showcasing its extensive operational scope. Additionally, the yard is equipped to receive rigs and other offshore structures directly onto its berth for recycling operations, further diversifying its service offerings. This full approach allows the facility to manage complex and large-scale decommissioning projects effectively.

The joint venture recently marked a significant operational milestone with the arrival of its first vessel for recycling at the ASRY yard. This initial project signals the commencement of the facility's activities and demonstrates its immediate readiness to process vessels. The facility incorporates full systems covering ship recycling, environmental protection, and hazardous waste management to ensure compliance with stringent international standards. ASRY also holds specific licenses that permit the recycling of vessels containing hazardous materials. These materials include those originating from production fluids, as well as naturally occurring radioactive material waste, ensuring compliance with specialized environmental regulations for complex decommissioning projects. The ability to safely manage such materials is a critical component of responsible ship recycling, reinforcing the facility's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Strategic Expansion and Industry Firsts

ASRY initiated its significant entry into the ship recycling sector in early 2023, commencing operations by handling container ships for Wan Hai Lines. This initial foray laid the groundwork for its current, more expansive partnership. The current partnership with Priya Blue Group represents a notable industry development, as it marks the first instance of an Indian ship recycler establishing global operations beyond South Asia. This expansion into Bahrain diversifies the geographical footprint for green ship recycling activities, bringing advanced expertise to a new region. The collaboration leverages ASRY's established infrastructure and regional presence, combining it with Priya Blue Group's expertise in sustainable vessel decommissioning. This strategic move aims to enhance the capacity for environmentally responsible ship recycling within the Middle East region, aligning with international standards for safe and green dismantling practices. The establishment of such a facility is expected to set new benchmarks for environmental compliance and operational efficiency in the regional maritime industry.

Expertise and Vision for Responsible Recycling

The joint venture is designed to establish the Middle East’s largest ship recycling yard, enhancing the region's capacity for sustainable vessel decommissioning. This initiative reflects a shared vision for promoting responsible practices within the global shipping industry. Priya Blue affiliated cash buyer Best Oasis will manage the commercial acquisition of vessels and source tonnage for the new facility. Best Oasis's role is key in ensuring a steady supply of vessels for recycling, applying its expertise in market dynamics and ethical sourcing. The yard integrates full systems covering ship recycling, environmental protection, and hazardous waste management to ensure compliance with international standards. This holistic approach guarantees that all aspects of the recycling process, from initial acquisition to final material disposal, adhere to the highest environmental and safety protocols. The partnership shows a commitment to advancing the principles of a circular economy within the maritime sector, contributing to a more sustainable future for global shipping.
