Inaugural AVONA Mission Sunday Cup Fosters Community in Bahrain

The first AVONA Mission Sunday Cup took place on 16 October at Gosi Ground in Hoora, Manama. Organizers of the AVONA Mission Sunday Cup stated, "Beyond the trophies, medals and results, the greatest achievement of the inaugural AVONA Mission Sunday Cup was the spirit in which it was celebrated." The event gathered participants under the umbrella of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia to mark the occasion. Athletes and community members from across the region attended the matches held at the Hoora venue. This inaugural tournament aimed to strengthen ties within the local congregation. Organizers noted that the competition served as a platform for fellowship among the diverse groups associated with the regional mission.

The tournament was organized by MISSIO-AVONA of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia. By selecting a sporting format for this inaugural gathering, the committee sought to engage the community through active participation. The matches at Gosi Ground provided a central location for teams to meet, interact, and compete in a structured environment designed to facilitate social interaction. The logistics of hosting such a multi-national event required extensive coordination to ensure that participants from various locations could travel to the venue in Manama.

Tournament Organization and Scope

Sixteen teams from Bahrain and other Gulf countries participated in the six-a-side football tournament. These squads represented the broader reach of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia, which comprises Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The geographic diversity of the participating teams showed the wide-reaching nature of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia. By drawing players from across these four nations, the tournament noted the interconnectedness of the communities residing within this specific jurisdiction.

MISSIO-AVONA of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia served as the primary organizer for the competition. Father Marcus Fernandes, OFM Cap. Initiated the event as part of the centenary celebration of World Mission Sunday. This milestone served as the foundational motivation for the athletic competition, linking the sports event directly to the broader liturgical and commemorative calendar of the church. The decision to host a tournament allowed the organization to reach a demographic that might not otherwise participate in traditional commemorative events, providing an accessible entry point for engagement.

Regarding the purpose of the athletic gathering, Father Marcus Fernandes, OFM Cap. MISSIO-AVONA Delegate, stated: "The initiative reflects the conviction that the Church’s mission is also expressed through its ability to build community, foster relationships and promote encounter." This statement clarifies the mission-oriented philosophy behind the sports program. By utilizing the six-a-side football format, the organizers successfully created a space where individual athletes could contribute to the collective goal of building community. The tournament concluded with a focus on the shared experience of the participants, emphasizing that the athletic results were secondary to the connections formed during the day-long event at Gosi Ground. The success of this inaugural cup suggests a potential for future iterations as a standard feature of the community calendar.
