Bahrain has launched a major campaign this year to support outdoor workers contending with extreme heat across worksites in the kingdom. This significant initiative, aimed at protecting laborers during the challenging summer months, shows the kingdom's commitment to worker welfare. The full programme for this year is being conducted with strong support from key entities including the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and the International Organisational for Migration. The collaborative effort notes a multi-faceted approach to ensuring the health and safety of the workforce.

Campaign Details and Scope

Organisers anticipate reaching up to 4,000 labourers across the kingdom in the coming months through a series of planned activities and distributions. It is estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 workers will directly benefit from the initiative this year, reflecting a broad scope designed to impact a significant portion of the outdoor workforce. Organisers stated, "This initiative is about protecting the health and dignity of the workers who continue contributing to Bahrain’s development under extremely demanding weather conditions." They further added that "Thirst Quenchers continues to strengthen a culture of care, safety and appreciation for the workforce that plays a vital role in the kingdom’s progress." This statement encapsulates the core values driving the campaign, emphasising both practical support and a broader message of recognition for the workers' contributions.

Annual Initiative and Support

The initiative by the Indian Community Welfare Association marks the highly anticipated return of its annual Thirst Quenchers 2026 and Summer Awareness Campaign. This campaign is now proudly in its 11th consecutive year of providing key assistance to vulnerable workers during the harsh summer months in Bahrain. The programme, which specifically focuses on supporting outdoor laborers, originally began in 2016. Its continued operation notes a sustained commitment to worker welfare in the kingdom, building upon a decade of consistent efforts to mitigate the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. The longevity of the campaign demonstrates its effectiveness and the ongoing need for such protective measures.

Community Event and Reach

Volunteers will conduct weekly visits to worksites across Bahrain, distributing essential items such as bottled water, juices, and laban, along with fresh fruits including oranges, apples, and bananas. These distributions will be accompanied by educational materials providing vital information on heat-stress prevention and other health precautions, ensuring workers are well-informed about staying safe. As part of the campaign, organisers will also host the Summer Fest – Workers Day 2026 on Friday at the Indian Club Bahrain. Around 450 workers are expected to attend this opening event, which serves as a community gathering and an opportunity for direct engagement. Organisers reiterated that the initiative "is about protecting the health and dignity of the workers who continue contributing to Bahrain’s development under extremely demanding weather conditions," adding, "Thirst Quenchers continues to strengthen a culture of care, safety and appreciation for the workforce that plays a vital role in the kingdom’s progress."

Purpose and Impact

The campaign operates in alignment with the Labour Ministry’s summer safety regulations, which are strictly enforced annually from June 15 until August 31. This adherence ensures that the campaign's efforts complement official government directives for worker protection during the hottest period of the year. Volunteers are scheduled to visit worksites and labour camps every Saturday, commencing on June 20 and continuing through to the end of August. These regular visits aim to distribute essential hydration and educational materials directly to outdoor workers during the peak summer months, providing consistent support when it is most needed. The strategic timing and consistent outreach are designed to maximise the positive impact on the health and well-being of the outdoor workforce.
